  • Need: To reduce the risk of HIV/STDs among Latino men living in rural regions of the United States.
  • Intervention: Soccer team leaders are elected and trained as lay health advisors to promote sexual health education among team members.
  • Results: Program participants report an increase in HIV testing, an increase in condom use, and an increase in awareness of how to prevent the transmission of HIV.

Men in Nursing Roundtable

  • Need: To increase diversity in the nursing workforce, specifically in terms of gender.
  • Intervention: The Men in Nursing Roundtable in Wisconsin meets quarterly to discuss recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Results: About 7 of the 10 roundtable members are from rural hospitals. Group members appreciate the supportive environment and plan to organize educational sessions to encourage more men to pursue careers in nursing.
Healthy Men Michigan

  • Need: Mental health assistance and resources for men in rural Michigan who struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts.
  • Intervention: The Healthy Men Michigan campaign promotes an anonymous, online screening that assesses the risk of depression and suicide in men. It also offers referrals to national and local resources specific to men’s mental health.
  • Results: More than 1,000 Michigan men have taken the screening. Healthy Men Michigan has secured partnerships with 223 partners, including healthcare facilities, small businesses, and recreational groups across the state, to promote the screening.
