Importance of Developing a Logic Model

A logic model is a visual tool that describes the need for a program, program inputs, outputs, goals, and objectives. Logic models help program planners illustrate the relationship between specific substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and prevention efforts and intended program effects. Logic models for SUD programs may include the following components:

  • The specific problem or issue the program will address, including the target population for the program
  • Contextual factors in the community that may be contributing to the problem or issue
  • Inputs, including staffing and resources
  • Planned interventions, including specific services and activities to be provided
  • Expected program results, including short-term, medium-term, and long-term outcomes
