Module 3: Program Clearinghouse

The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy has funded several programs in rural areas with the goal of creating or improving transportation programs as part of the 330A Outreach Authority program. This program focuses on expanding access to healthcare services in rural areas.

Examples of current 330A Outreach Authority grantees and other organizations that have developed promising programs designed to improve transportation in a rural community are provided below. Evidence-based and promising service models for improving transportation are available in Module 2.

  • Center for Independent Living for Western Wisconsin
    Project Title: New Freedom Transportation Program
    Synopsis: Operates a volunteer driver program and a one-call center for older residents and people with disabilities.
  • The Health Wagon
    Project Title: The Health Wagon
    Synopsis: The Health Wagon is a nonprofit organization located in rural Appalachia. The program provides comprehensive healthcare including primary and preventive care, dental, behavioral, telehealth, and specialty care to the medically underserved in the Southwest region of Virginia. The Health Wagon also spearheads the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Wise County Health Expedition that provides free eye, dental, and medical care for a three day period in July each year.
  • HealthTran
    Project Title: HealthTran
    Synopsis: The HealthTran program provides rides to primary and specialty healthcare appointments for residents of rural Missouri.
  • ITNAmerica
    Project Title: ITNCountry
    Synopsis: The ITNCountry program allows rural communities to design a system that can use paid, volunteer or a combination of drivers to support transportation needs for their community.
  • Living Independence Network Corporation
    Project Title: Voucher Program
    Synopsis: The Living Independence Network Corporation's voucher program assists resident in rural Idaho in overcoming financial barriers to accessing transportation.
  • North Country Health Consortium
    Project Title: The Molar Express
    Synopsis: The Molar Express is part of a rural health network offering mobile dental clinic services to schools and nursing homes in rural New Hampshire.
  • PMH Medical Center
    Project Title: Community Paramedic Program
    Synopsis: The PMH Medical Center's Community Paramedic Program uses trained local paramedics to operate as a safety net within rural areas of eastern Washington.
