The Indian Health Service Health Professions Scholarship provides financial aid covering tuition, required fees, and other educational and living expenses for qualified American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate- and graduate-level students enrolled in specific health profession degree programs.
Recipients of the scholarship are required to fulfill a service commitment at an Indian health facility one year of service for each year of support, for a maximum of 4 years full-time.
Individuals who are a member of a federally recognized tribe and Alaska Natives are eligible to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in an appropriately accredited school by August 1, 2022 and pursuing a course of study in a health profession.
Eligible programs for the current funding cycle include:
- Bachelor degree programs:
- Nursing
- Engineering (Civil or Environmental)
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist
- Master degree programs:
- Nurse midwife
- Clinical social work
- Nurse practitioner
- Physician assistant
- Doctoral degree programs:
- Clinical psychology
- Dentistry
- Nurse anesthetist
- Nurse practitioner (DNP)
- Optometry
- Pharmacy
- Physician, allopathy or osteopathy
- Physical therapy
- Podiatry
Specific eligibility requirements

The award will cover tuition, required fees, and other educational and living expenses.
The required commitment is one year of service per year of scholarship support.
