Purpose

The Social and Economic Development Strategies Program (SEDS) will award funding to projects that promote economic independence for Native American communities.

The focus is on community-driven projects that grow local economies, support local businesses, strengthen families, preserve Native cultures, and increase social development and infrastructure in Native American communities.

Program areas of interest include:

  • Social development:
    • Mental health
    • Substance misuse, smoking, and vaping
    • Suicide prevention
    • Nutrition and health
    • Native arts and culture
    • Community safety and security
    • Strengthening child and family well-being
    • Early childhood education and development
    • Two-Spirit/LGBTQ+
    • Youth development
  • Economic Development:
    • Agriculture
    • Asset building
    • Economic infrastructure
    • Entrepreneurship and microbusiness
    • Housing
    • Master plans for community and economic development
    • Native Community Development Financial Institutions
    • Tourism
    • Workforce development and career pathways
  • Governance:
    • Comprehensive intergovernmental strategies
    • Emergency preparedness and response
    • Federal recognition planning
    • Governmental, judicial, or organizational administration

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Federally recognized tribes
  • Incorporated non-federally recognized tribes
  • Incorporated state-recognized tribes
  • Consortia of tribes
  • Incorporated, nonprofit, multi-purpose, community-based Indian organizations
  • Urban Indian centers
  • Native Community Development Financial Institutions (Native CDFIs)
  • Alaska Native villages
  • Nonprofit native organizations in Alaska with village-specific projects
  • Incorporated nonprofit Alaska Native multipurpose, community-based organizations
  • Nonprofit Alaska Native regional corporations and/or associations in Alaska with village-specific projects
  • Nonprofit Alaska Native community entities or tribal governing bodies
  • Public and nonprofit private agencies serving Native Hawaiians
  • National or regional incorporated nonprofit Native American organizations with Native American community-specific objectives
  • Public and nonprofit private agencies serving Native peoples from Guam, American Samoa, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
  • Tribal colleges and universities
  • Colleges and universities located in Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands that serve Native American Pacific Islanders
  • Faith-based and community organizations that meet the eligibility requirements

Nationwide and U.S. Territories
Amount of funding

Award ceiling: $300,000 per year
Award floor: $100,000 per year
Project period: Project periods can be 12, 24, or 36 months
Expected number of awards: 14
Estimated total funding: $13,000,000

Grantees are required to match at least 20% of the total approved cost with cash and/or in-kind resources.
