Provides funding for research projects focused on understanding and addressing disparities in minority and health disparity populations in surgical care and outcomes, including factors that influence the disparities.
Health disparity populations include:
- Black/African American
- Hispanic/Latino
- Asian American
- American Indian/Alaska Native
- Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander
- Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations
- Underserved rural populations
Research objectives, methodology, and examples of topics are described in detail in the application instructions.

R01 project budgets are not limited, but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum project period is 5 years.
