The Rural and Tribal Passenger Transportation Technical Assistance program provides technical assistance for tribes and rural communities of less than 50,000 people to plan system start-up, transit service improvements, facility development, marketing, transportation coordination, and staff training.

Potential projects are reviewed to establish eligibility, and are then scored and ranked according to the selection criteria:

  • Will the project help create or preserve jobs or small businesses?
  • Is the project located in an economically distressed area?
  • Is the project likely to be implemented after technical assistance has been provided?
  • Are project goals directly linked to economic development?
  • Will technical assistance be utilized in an innovate way to help resolve transportation issues and economic concerns?
  • Is there local consensus and community support for the project?

Requests for technical assistance may be submitted by private for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, or federally recognized tribes. Other public entities are not eligible.

Rural is defined as an area with a population of less than 50,000.
