Purpose

The National Environmental Public Health Internship Program is a 400 hour internship designed to encourage environmental health students to consider careers at local, state, or tribal environmental health departments following graduation.

Students will be placed with a local, state, or tribal health department and paired with a mentor. The internship program includes a variety of professional and career development opportunities for participants.

There are multiple internship cohorts each year with opportunities to enroll in fall, spring, or summer. Students will complete 400 internship hours over a 10-16 week period. In-person, virtual, and hybrid formats are available, depending on student and health department needs.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria.

  1. Attend a National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC) accredited undergraduate or graduate environmental health academic program
  2. Be a current sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student at the time the application is submitted and have completed at least one full year of academic training with a majority of courses in environmental health focus areas
  3. Be enrolled as a student during the summer or fall internship
  4. Have active health insurance

Amount of funding

Participants will receive a base stipend of $6,000 for undergraduates and $8,000 for graduates for a 10-16 week internship. The stipend is intended to cover lodging, food, and incidental expenses.

A need-based allowance starting at $500 is available for students who relocate for the internship.
