Relatives as Parents Program
The Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) provides grants to support the creation or expansion of healthcare, mental health services, and other supportive services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting due to the absence of the parents.
Funded programs must offer supportive services to relative caregivers and the children they are raising, with emphasis on relative caregiving families that are not in the formal foster care system. Services and assistance must include at least 2 of the following:
- Healthcare services
- Mental health services
- Individual and/or family counseling
- Transportation assistance
- Housing assistance
- Benefits and legal guidance
- Children's services and/or services with schools
- Services to special populations
- Educational seminars
- Group recreational activities
The applicant must have a 501(c)(3) or equivalent tax-exempt status or be a state agency.
The award amount is $10,000 in year one, renewable for $5,000 in the second year, based on evaluation of the first year's activities and potential for future continuity of the program. Up to 15 awards will be made.
