Health Data for Action: Leveraging Health Data for Actionable Insights (HD4A) provides access to data available from:

  • Health Care Cost Institute
  • OptumLabs
  • CareJourney
  • Athenahealth

Potential innovative research projects for each data provider are listed in the Funding Opportunity Brochure.


Eligible applicants are researchers, as well as practitioners in the public and private sector working with researchers, based in the United States or its territories.

Preference will be given to public and nonprofit entities.

Amount of funding

Successful applicants will be given access to the selected dataset at no cost for 12 months. No financial awards of any kind will be given.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation anticipates awarding:

  • 9 projects using HCCI data
  • 6 projects using OptumLabs data
  • 6 projects using CareJourney data
  • 5 projects using athenahealth data
Application process

Submit a brief proposal online by December 14, 2018. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal, with a deadline of April 5, 2019.
