Purpose

Rural PREP Microresearch Grants support locally generated and implemented, community-based research projects leading to local solutions to problems in underserved communities in the areas of:

  • Rural healthcare
  • Rural population health
  • Rural health workforce education and training

There are two types of awards:

  1. Design Awards are for projects that are under development, with a plan to complete the study within 2 years. Design awardees will be given preference for an implementation award in the 2022-2023 funding cycle.
  2. Implementation Awards are for fully-designed projects with a plan to complete the project by June 20 of the academic year in which the award is made and that can be disseminated within 2 years of the award notice.

Preference will be given to projects that demonstrate community engagement through in-kind contributions and projects that are collaborative across health professions and/or institutions.

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to the following institutions:

Eligible applicants are current students in a medical school, nurse practitioner program, physician assistant program, residents in a rural physician residency program, or other health professionals training for primary care practice in a rural location.

Applicants should contact their institution to determine their eligibility before applying.

Applicants may be reimbursed for up to $1,500 for allowable research expenses.
