Purpose

The Nurse Scholar Program is a distance learning opportunity available to rural nurses designed to increase knowledge base in prevention, identification, and assessment of diseases related to agricultural work exposures.

Training topics include:

  • Increasing the use of hearing protection among farmers
  • Health and safety issues of the aging farmer
  • Prevention of heat related illnesses
  • Respiratory health of agricultural producers in clinical practice, including allergic and non-allergic respiratory diseases and respiratory protective equipment
  • Skin diseases common to agricultural industry
  • Ergonomics
  • The opioid crisis
  • Integration of behavioral health for rural practice
  • Zoonotic diseases
  • Protecting women in agriculture
  • Addressing the mental health gap in rural communities
  • Health and well-being of immigrant and migrant farm workers
  • Head to toe personal protective equipment
  • Pediatric farm injuries
  • The impact of sleep deprivation on safety and health
  • The health effects of chemical and pesticide exposures
Eligibility

Rural nurses are eligible to apply. Applicants must commit to completion of the full course.

Amount of funding

The cost of the program is $500.

Participants receive 23.75 credit hours of continuing education.

A 50% ($250) scholarship is available for nurses working in nonprofit organizations, Rural Health Clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers, government agencies, and educational institutions.

A full scholarship ($500) is available for all nurses from Illinois that work in Rural Health Clinics, government agencies, academia, and nonprofit organizations.

60 full scholarships ($500) are available for nurses who work in Rural Health Clinics, government agencies, academia, and nonprofit organizations.

All content, testing, and evaluation must be completed by March 15, 2024 in order to get continuing education credit.
