The AARP Community Challenge provides funding for projects that work to improve livability for all residents of a community. The program vision is that urban, suburban, and rural communities in the United States are accessible for all.

The project goals are:

  • Deliver a range of transportation and mobility options in the community that increase connectivity, walkability, bikeability, and/or and access to public and private transit
  • Create vibrant public places in the community that improve open spaces, parks, and access to other amenities
  • Support the availability of a range of housing in the community that increase accessible and affordable housing options
  • Other improvements based on the most important needs in the community and the best quick-action ideas to address them

Project types that will be prioritized include:

  • Permanent physical improvement in the community
  • Temporary demonstrations that will lead to long-term change
  • New and innovative programming or services

Eligible applicants include:

  • 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations
  • Government entities
  • Other types of organizations, considered on a case-by-case basis
