Purpose

The NBCC Foundation provides fellowships for master's and doctoral degree-level counseling students from minority backgrounds. The purpose of the program is to ensure that the behavioral health needs of all Americans are met, regardless of language or culture, thereby reducing health disparities and improving overall community health and well-being. For the purpose of this program, minorities include racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, gender, sexual orientation, rural, and military groups.

Applicants must commit to teach, administer, research and/or provide direct mental health services to minority and underserved populations in the private, nonprofit, or public sectors within one year of graduation and for the duration of two years post-graduation.

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of and experience in providing services to one or more of the following:

  • Underserved minority communities
  • Children and adolescents
  • Geriatric groups
  • Minority communities in inner cities and rural areas
  • Minority persons, including gender and sexual orientation minorities
  • Veterans and military families
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents that are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited graduate level counseling program. Other specific eligibility and service requirements are listed in the application instructions for master's level fellowships and doctoral level fellowships.

The program is not limited to individuals from minority populations; however priority will be given to strong candidates from African American, Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

Amount of funding

For master's degree-level students: 30 fellowships for $10,000, plus travel expenses to participate in other program-related training.

For doctoral degree-level students: 20 fellowships for $20,000, plus travel expenses to participate in other program-related training.
