Purpose

Tobacco Control Policies to Promote Health Equity provides funding for observational or intervention research focused on reducing disparities in tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. Populations of focus include older individuals, black Americans, Hispanics, people with low socioeconomic status, and people living outside metropolitan areas.

Primary research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Comprehensive smoke free policies
  • Policies to reduce the appeal of tobacco products through advertising and marketing restrictions at the state or local level, or reduce the demand for tobacco products with various pricing interventions
  • Policies related to coverage for tobacco dependence treatment
  • Overarching policy environment, such as studies that examine the dynamic interplay of different tobacco prevention and control policies on tobacco use, how tobacco control policies may work together to reduce tobacco use among both youth and adults, focusing on how to accelerate progress in communities that have experienced slower declines in tobacco use
  • Innovative dissemination and implementation of research findings

There are two funding opportunities under this program:

  1. R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant for the development of new research activities in the early and conceptual stages
