Purpose

This program provides funding to support investigator-initiated proposals for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects designed to inform patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders in making personalized clinical decisions across a wide range of conditions, populations, and treatments.

Projects must align with at least one of the PCORI National Priorities for Health. Applications may focus on up to three of the 12 Topic Themes.

Special research areas of interest for this funding cycle include studies focused on long COVID, social needs/determinants of health, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Funding available under category 3 supports studies that leverage PCORnet® to advance PCORI's national priorities.

Populations of interest include:

  • Underserved racial and ethnic groups
  • Low-income groups
  • Women
  • Children (ages 0 to 17 years)
  • Older adults (ages 65 years and older)
  • Residents of rural areas
  • Individuals with special healthcare needs, including individuals with disabilities
  • Individuals with multiple chronic diseases
  • Individuals with rare diseases
  • Individuals whose genetic makeup affects their medical outcomes
  • Patients with low health literacy or numeracy or limited English proficiency
  • Gender and sexual minorities
  • Veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families
Eligibility

Eligible applicants include academic research, private sector research, or study-conducting entities. This may include agencies and instrumentalities of the federal government, nonprofit/for-profit research organizations, and colleges/universities, among others.

Funding amounts:

  • Category 1 awards up to $5,000,000
  • Category 2 awards between $5,000,000 - $10,000,000
  • Category 3 awards up to $10,000,000 for studies that leverage PCORnet® to advance PCORI's national priorities

Project period: Up to 5 years

Applicants must submit a letter of intent through the online system by February 6, 2024. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application, with a deadline of May 7, 2024.
