Purpose

Community Responsive Grants are intended to help Maine communities address inequities in health access and outcomes by focusing on changing policies, practices, and perceptions that create barriers to healthcare and good health. The program provides funding to organizations in Maine to carry out planning or implementation projects to identify emerging opportunities, test innovative approaches or new ideas, and implement programs informed by local experience to better meet community needs in the foundation's four goal areas:

  1. Equitable access to care through insurance coverage/free care; recruitment of health, mental health, and dental workforce; rural healthcare transformation; and lowering healthcare costs
  2. Systems change to address critical health issues, such as ensuring access to quality dental care and building an integrated behavioral health system to advance treatment and recovery for substance use disorders
  3. Better health for specific populations by addressing social determinants of health and building capacity in communities that experience health inequities, with particular focus on the health needs of children and older adults
  4. Shared leadership to increase public commitment to achieving health equity and efforts to build leadership skills and capacity to improve healthcare access and health outcomes in Maine
