Purpose

The Wilderness and Austere Medicine (WAM) Fellowship at Dartmouth is a year-long training experience for physicians to develop clinical skills and leadership abilities in the diverse field of wilderness and austere medicine. Fellows will gain experience in providing high quality healthcare in resource limited settings in preparation for careers in wilderness medicine leadership positions. The fellowship is based at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, which is in a rural, mountainous area in western New Hampshire.

The WAM training program includes the following elements: prehospital experience with HEMS and EMS faculty, hands on wilderness medical and rescue training, US training for austere settings, academic style didactics, research, teaching, and technical training in outdoor adventure activities.

Wilderness and austere medicine includes:

  • Dive medicine
  • Endurance racing medicine
  • Expedition medicine
  • High-altitude medicine
  • Search and rescue
  • Shipboard medicine
  • Medicine in resource-limited settings both domestically and in the developing world
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are medical school graduates in the U.S. and Canada, as well as graduates from medical schools outside the U.S. who meet the Dartmouth-Hitchcock criteria for participation in a fellowship program.

Fellowship benefits include:

  • A salary
  • Employee benefits, including including health insurance, disability insurance, retirement, CME, and paid vacation
  • Funding to obtain the Diploma in Mountain Medicine and additional field research experience, valued at $15,000
  • $3000 CME budget
  • Membership in WMS, SAEM, ACEP

Selected applicants will be invited to complete a personal interview.
