Purpose

The Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) will provide support for nonprofit employers in Michigan by providing training for eligible employees as community health workers (CHWs).

Eligible participants will be:

  • Enrolled in the MiCHWA Community Health Worker Certificate Program
  • Graduate with a certificate
  • Entered into the MiCHWA registry

MiCHWA CHW training is an 8 week, 166 hr course, usually scheduled 2 days per week from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The employee must live within the community that the employer serves and must commit to work with the same employer for one year post certification.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for employers in Michigan:

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit status
  • Less than $500,000 in annual revenue
  • Primarily serve in communities with long-standing health disparities related to race, income, geographic location, and other sociodemographic characteristics (including incarceration and homelessness), or serve members of the LGBTQ+ community

Organizations with a higher annual revenue may qualify if serving a special population, which includes but is not limited to native American tribes and those whose primary language is either Arabic, Burmese, Bangla, Chinese, or Spanish.
