Purpose

The Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Payment Program will provide grants to freestanding children's hospitals to support the training of pediatric and other residents in graduate medical education (GME) programs.

The program is designed to support freestanding children's teaching hospitals that:

  • Educate and train future pediatricians, pediatric sub-specialists, and other non-pediatric residents
  • Provide care for vulnerable and underserved children
  • Conduct innovative and valuable pediatric research
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are freestanding children's hospitals with inpatients that are predominantly under 18 years of age, that participate in an approved GME program, and have a Medicare provider agreement.

Amount of funding

Award ceiling: Formula based, proportional to the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) residents the hospital trains. Hospitals that serve a rural area or provide a rural training track will receive adjustments to resident FTE limits.
Project period: 1 year
Estimated number of award recipients: 62
Estimated total program funding: $365,000,000
