Wabanaki Public Health Greeting Van Wabanaki Public Health Serves Native People, Community, and Culture During COVID-19 Crisis

Tribal communities have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving the four federally recognized tribes in Maine, Wabanaki Public Health is taking a stand to address these disparities. A recipient of the Rural Tribal COVID Response (RTCR) grant, they have implemented a number of programs to meet the needs of their communities, providing support by reinforcing cultural connection even in the most difficult of times.

CMS Updates COVID-19 Testing Methodology for Nursing Homes
Sep 29, 2020 -- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced an update to the methodology employed to determine the rate of COVID-19 cases in counties, affecting nursing homes who are required to test staff for COVID-19 based on the positivity rate of their respective counties. The changes help to reduce the burden on nursing homes in rural counties with seemingly high comparative positivity rates.

Health on Wheels: Tricked-Out RVs Deliver Addiction Treatment to Rural Communities
Sep 28, 2020 -- Features an addiction treatment program in Colorado that transformed six RVs into mobile clinics to reach rural and remote communities across the state. Even while other addiction clinics closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the mobile clinics continued to provide addiction services, including a telehealth bridge to connect patients with doctors who can prescribe medicine to fight addiction.

Private Equity-Owned Hospitals More Likely to Be in Low-Income, Rural Areas
Sep 28, 2020 -- Summarizes a study that examined hospital data from 2018 and found that private equity-owned hospitals were more likely to be in low-income and rural areas. Discusses how private equity–owned hospitals differ from non-acquired hospitals due to geographic and socioeconomic reasons, but more research is necessary to know if those differences are related to acquisition to begin with.

Sep 25, 2020 -- The National Quality Forum (NQF) is seeking nominations for members of a new multistakeholder Rural Telehealth and Healthcare System Readiness Committee, which will create a measurement framework linking quality of care delivered by telehealth, healthcare system readiness, and health outcomes in a disaster. Nominations are due October 26, 2020.

Rebuilding the Foundation of Rural Community Health after COVID-19
Sep 24, 2020 -- Blog post discusses how COVID-19 highlighted the existing cracks in rural America's community health system, including increased risk of facility closures, loss of services, low investment in public health, and maldistribution of health professionals. Recommends four policy changes that would rebuild the rural health system, focusing on new financing and delivery models, community engagement, local health planning, and regionalization of delivery systems.

Sep 28, 2020 -- The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking comments on the draft Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan: A Roadmap to Elimination (2021-2025). The Hepatitis Plan is intended to serve as a roadmap for all stakeholders at all levels to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat in the United States by 2030. Comments are due by October 8, 2020.
