Oct 7, 2020 -- Provides an overview of a nationwide poll that reported one in every four households have been unable to get medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic, widening the disparities that already exist in rural communities. Describes that in rural areas, some obstacles to healthcare include high rates of uninsured residents, small healthcare workforce, and an increase of hospital closures.

Red-Zone Report: More than Half of Rural Counties Hit Red-Zone Level

CDC COVID-19 Data Tracker Now Includes Rural Trends
Oct 1, 2020 -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the CDC COVID-19 Tracker now reports trends in COVID-19 incidence and mortality by county-level population factors, allowing users to classify data by rurality. Describes how rural areas have seen an increase in infections and deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Trump Administration Announces $20 Billion in New Phase 3 Provider Relief Funding
Oct 1, 2020 -- The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced $20 billion in new funding for providers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Explains that providers who have already received funding through the Provider Relief Fund are allowed to apply for additional funding and some previously ineligible providers are also invited. The application window is October 5 – November 6, 2020.

Mental Health 'Tsunami' Looms: Can California Prevent a Surge in Suicides?

Public Inspection: DHS: Strengthening the H-1B Nonimmigrant Visa Classification Program
Oct 7, 2020 -- Pre-publication notice of an interim final rule from the Department of Homeland Security amending regulations governing the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program. The purpose of the changes is to better ensure that each H-1B worker will be working for a qualified employer in a position that meets the statutory definition of a "specialty occupation." Comments on the interim final rule are due within 60 days of the publication of this notice in the Federal Register, which is scheduled for October 8, 2020.

Oct 6, 2020 -- The Health Resources and Services Administration is seeking comments and burden estimates on an application Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and Rural Health Clinics (RHC) must submit to receive payment for the average training costs of eligible physicians and practitioners who obtain Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) waivers to furnish opioid use disorder treatment services. Comments are due by December 7, 2020.
