Jul 8, 2019 - A $5.8 million grant to the University of Pittsburgh will fund research on opioid use in Appalachia. Part of their focus will include differences for rural areas, as previous research on drug use generally focuses on urban populations. A 2015 study showed that Appalachia had an opioid overdose mortality rate 65% higher than other areas for people between ages 15-64, and other studies have shown disparities in rural opioid use and treatment.
