Indian Health Service Dental Externships
Indian Health Service Dental Externships provide an opportunity for dental students to gain professional experience, as well as to determine whether a career with the Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Oral Health or a position at a specific IHS or Tribal site would be a career path of interest.
Most externships require a commitment of 2-4 weeks between May 1 – September 30.
Externships are available for dental students between their third and fourth years of school within the months of May through September.
Covers the following travel expenses, up to $2,000:
- Airfare, which is deducted from the budgeted expenses
- Lodging (at government rates) when free housing is not available
- A per diem for miscellaneous expenses
Students must be prepared to cover the travel costs (other than airfare) related to the externship. Reimbursement will be paid upon completion of travel.
