Purpose

Minnesota's State Loan Repayment Program provides funds to pay back educational debt to maternal health and oral health providers who agree to complete a 2 year service obligation in a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).

The program goal is to increase access to primary care services in geographically isolated, as well as diverse and economically challenged communities.

Objectives:

  1. Recruit and retain providers to grow primary healthcare workforce in Health Professional Service Areas (HPSAs) within the state
  2. Increase access to primary care in underserved communities and for underserved populations
  3. Reduce disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for all underserved communities
Eligibility

Providers must be U.S. citizens, must not have any service obligations to another agency, and must be licensed and ready to begin full-time clinical practice at the approved site once a contract has been signed.

The following types of health professionals may apply:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (MD/DO)
  • Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP - must have a Women's Health Certificate)
  • Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
  • Dental Therapist (DT)
  • Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH)
  • General and Pediatric Dentist (DDS)

Amount of funding

Primary care providers:

  • Full-time: $37,500
  • Part time: $18,750

Dental providers:

  • Full-time: $25,000
  • Part time: $12,500

Providers must be practicing full-time in nonprofit private or public sites in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
