Purpose

The Maine J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 Visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in an approved area of Maine, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas that typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.

Eligibility

Primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and sub-specialty trained physicians are eligible to apply for a State-30 J-1 waiver.

Geographic coverage
Maine
Amount of funding

This is an incentive program that offers foreign physicians a visa waiver, allowing them to work in the U.S.

Application process

A link to application instructions is available on the program website.

Applications are accepted annually between October and September. A maximum of 11 waivers are granted per facility. If on November 1st slots are still available, facilities who have used their 11 slots may submit additional applications. Waivers are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

After review, successful applicants will be invited to send 2 complete copies of the application package within 3 days of notification. Hand-delivered applications will not be accepted.
