The Maryland J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in an underserved area of Maryland, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas that typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.
Primary care physicians and specialty trained physicians are eligible to apply.
Preference is given to applications from:
- Primary care foreign national physicians in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas, medically underserved areas, and Medically Underserved Populations
- Medical practices in underserved communities
- Medical practices that have a demonstrated historic commitment to serving underserved populations
- Medical practices that have had difficulty recruiting physicians because of their geographic location
- Rural counties in the state
This is an incentive program that offers foreign physicians a visa waiver, allowing them to work in the U.S.
