Purpose

The North Carolina J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 Visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in an underserved area of North Carolina, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas that typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are primary care physicians who have or will have completed residencies in family practice, general internal medicine, pediatrics, or obstetrics/gynecology. Specialists will be considered if there is a documented shortage of the specialty in the service area.

Waiver requests must come from an eligible health center on behalf of a J-1 physician, and not directly from the physician.
