The Texas Small Rural Hospital Improvement Grant Program (SHIP) supports small rural hospitals of 49 beds or less by:

  • Enabling the purchase of equipment and/or training to attain the value-based purchasing provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA)
  • Aiding small rural hospitals in joining or becoming Accountable Care Organizations, or creating shared savings programs per the ACA
  • Enabling small rural hospitals to purchase health information technology, equipment, and/or training to comply with meaningful use, ICD-10 standards, and payment bundling

The Texas State Office of Rural Health will compile all eligible applications and submit a single federal SHIP application for the state.


Eligible applicants are small hospitals with 49 beds or less located in a rural area of Texas.

Awards are anticipated to total $9,000 per hospital.
