Purpose

Tribal-Researcher Capacity Building (TRCB) Grants provide funding to support research involving federally recognized tribes and tribal-based organizations on issues of crime and justice.

Awards will be made under 2 funding categories:

  1. Planning grants: small grants to develop new and innovative criminal and juvenile justice research studies involving federally recognized tribes and tribal organizations representing a new tribal-researcher investigator partnership
  2. Research and evaluation grants: funding for scientific proposals from previous TRCB grantees in fiscal years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 that are based on the partnership or results of the activities funded under the original planning grant

Health related research priorities for this program include:

  • The effectiveness of the criminal justice response to combating the opioid crisis, and more broadly the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs
  • Combating violent crime and responding to, and reducing victimization
  • Child and elder abuse
  • Sexual assault
  • Murdered, missing, and trafficked persons
  • Exploited children
  • Provision, role, and impact of forensic science services, particularly as it relates to combating violent crime
Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • State and territory governments
  • City, township, county, and special district governments
  • Federally recognized Native American tribal governments
  • Tribal organizations
  • Nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status
  • Public, state-controlled, and private institutions of higher education
  • For-profit organizations and small businesses

Research and evaluation grants:
Award ceiling: $1,000,000
