Purpose

The National Indian Health Board Heroes in Health Awards recognize individuals, organizations, and programs whose leadership and work has affected change or impacted healthcare for American Indian/Native American (AI/AN) populations at the local, tribal, regional, and/or national level.

Award categories are:

  • Area/Regional Health Warrior Award - Pays tribute to an individual or organization whose work has contributed to improving AI/AN healthcare or has affected change on an area or regional level
  • National Sovereignty in Action Awards - Honors an individual or organization whose work has had a significant national impact on AI/AN healthcare or public health, including innovative approaches or programs and honors an individual or organization whose national advocacy efforts have advanced AI/AN healthcare or public health through legislative, regulatory, or policy changes
  • Jake Whitecrow Award - Recognizes an individual or organization with outstanding lifetime achievements in elevating healthcare advocacy, raising awareness, or affecting positive change for AI/AN healthcare at the national level
  • National Next Generation Award - Recognizes a young AI/AN leader (age 18–26 years of age) whose outstanding contributions have improved tribal health outcomes, increased tribal health awareness, or strengthened tribal health advocacy among peers or within their community at the national level
Eligibility

Nominations are open to Tribes, tribal organizations, individuals, programs, and organizations serving tribal communities.
