INMED Reimagine Indians into Medicine (RISE) Summer Academy
The INMED Reimagine Indians into Medicine (RISE) Summer Academy is a 2-week program for enrolled members of federally recognized tribes who aspire to be physicians.
Program focuses:
- Cultural engagement and community building which includes learning, activities, and gatherings with Washington State University's Native American Health Sciences office and clinical faculty at the Spokane campus. During the in-person visit, scholars will visit local clinics that receive IHS funding to serve Native American patients.
- Medical school admissions with guidance on how to develop a competitive application, mock interviews, personal statement editing/feedback, and presentations by medical school admissions deans from multiple medical schools
- Supplemental basic science refresher coursework with a focus on helping students be better prepared to enter medical school - subjects include anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, and endocrinology
- Medical student mentors
- MCAT prep
The program will take place between June 8–19, 2026, with a combination of virtual and in-person sessions in Spokane, Washington.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe
- Have a non-competitive MCAT score or plan to take the MCAT within 1-6 months of the academy end date
- Plan to apply to medical school within the next 2 years
- Can provide transcripts for all college coursework taken
There is no cost to participate. Travel to/from the WSU Health Sciences campus in Spokane and room and board during in-person days of the program are provided.
