The Rural Immersion Institute of the North is a program of the Alaska Area Health Education Center (AHEC). It is a 10 day summer educational experience designed to introduce health professions students to rural healthcare experiences. The program goal is to offer training and experience to empower students to pursue rural practice and opportunities in graduate school and beyond.
Participants will:
- Learn about Alaskan culture
- Meet with healthcare professionals
- Be paired with healthcare professionals for hands-on rural healthcare experiences
- Present about lessons learned
Eligible participants include undergraduate juniors, seniors, gap year students, and graduate students in the full spectrum of pre-professional health careers. Licensed professionals are welcome to apply and will be accepted on a case by case basis.
The program fee is $3,500, which covers lodging, program transportation, rural site airfare, instruction, supplies, and some meals.
Students are responsible for other meals and round-trip airfare to Anchorage, as well as the cost of the background check and any necessary vaccinations.
Limited scholarships are available.
