Purpose

The Northern Border Regional Commission J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 Visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in underserved, rural areas of the Northern Border region, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas that typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.

Eligibility

Primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and sub-specialty trained physicians working in the Northern Border region are eligible to apply for a J-1 waiver.

This is an incentive program that offers foreign physicians a visa waiver, allowing them to work in the U.S.

Requests for a waiver must be sponsored by a state within the NBRC's region. To begin the process, contact the designated J-1 Program specialist in the state of employment.

Specialists will only be able to apply for a waiver after April 1, 2024, with an appropriate showing of need.
