The West Virginia Rural Community Health Scholars is a program for health professions students in West Virginia that offers opportunities for hands-on training, experience in rural communities, and networking with other students and professionals.
The program requires a 2 year commitment and consists of:
- 40 hours of community-based experiential or clinical training in a rural or healthcare shortage area (CBSE)
- 40 hours of didactic education
- 20 hours of rural immersion experience
Participants will:
- Build leadership skills in the profession and in the community
- Receive supplemental training and education from experts in rural healthcare
- Develop an understanding of how to best implement healthcare services in rural and healthcare shortage areas
- Learn how to work as part of an interprofessional team
- Provide meaningful patient care in the field and gain hands-on experience
Students should have an interest in rural healthcare and be currently enrolled in an eligible health professions degree or certificate program in West Virginia.
