Purpose

The Denali Commission is offering financial support to meet local match requirements or address funding gaps for transportation improvement projects and supporting infrastructure in rural areas of Alaska that often face challenges in securing funding.

The Commission will consider funding requests for activities that:

  • Demonstrate project readiness
  • Supports connection to multi-modal transportation options
  • Support planned land use, local or regional plans, and the pursuit of housing and economic development opportunities
  • Improve community health and safety, and promotes local and regional connectivity
  • Improve system resiliency to extreme weather and natural disasters

Proposals may include but are not limited to the following activities:

Surface Transportation:

  • Road safety improvements including resurfacing, dust control, and drainage improvements
  • “Board” roads and All-Terrain Vehicle trails, seasonal roads and signage enhancements, multi-use trails and walkways for bicycles and pedestrians
  • Rural transit activities including facility improvements and limited duration operation/maintenance of transit services and vehicles

Water Transportation:

  • Improvements to rural port and harbor facilities including floating dock and moorage systems
  • Boat launch ramps, barge landings, storage and laydown areas, and other adjacent support facilities.
Eligibility

Eligible applicants include municipal, borough, and tribal governments; regional tribal nonprofit organizations; regional housing authorities; and other nonprofit organizations. Projects must benefit the public in Alaska.

Eligible transportation projects are those that are applying, have applied, or have secured federal funding that requires a local match and/or have secured funding but demonstrate a funding gap of up to 30% of the total project cost.

Email completed interest forms to projects@denali.gov by February 13, 2026. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal, with a deadline of February 26, 2026.
