Purpose

The Tennessee Rural Healthcare Training program offers unding to support rural training and learning opportunities for pre- and post-licensure clinical professions in Tennessee.

Program goals are to increase healthcare access through:

  • Rural healthcare preceptorship and rotation programs
  • Rural training tracks, accelerated medical training pathways, and fellowships
  • Rural residency programs which prioritize placement in rural communities
  • Continuing Education/Continuing Medical Education Courses.
Eligibility

Applicants must meet at least one of the criteria listed below and have a specific focus on rural opportunities for healthcare professions, particularly in family medicine, OB/GYN, nursing, and behavioral health:

  • Rural healthcare providers and healthcare delivery organizations (public, private, academic and nonprofit)
  • Accredited health professions schools
  • Accredited sponsoring institutions for post-graduate training and/or continuing education
  • Area Health Education Centers and the Tennessee Center for Health Workforce Development
  • Other healthcare focused organizations that provide or facilitate healthcare training pre- and post-licensure, including licensure-required continuing education

The Tennessee Department of Health considers 89 of the state's 95 counties as rural, defining non-rural as the counties of Shelby, Jackson, Nashville, Hamilton, Knox and Sullivan.

  • Rural healthcare training programs - $5,398,250
  • Rural healthcare preceptorship programs - $1,200,000
  • Rural rotation programs - $408,250
  • Rural training tracks - $250,000
  • Accelerated medical school and residency training programs - $250,000
  • Rural family medicine - OB/GYN fellowship - $740,000
  • APRN-focused rural health entrepreneur fellowship - $1,000,000
  • Rural residency programs available through Tennessee medical schools, nursing programs, and provider locations - $1,500,000
  • Continuing education/continuing medical education courses - $50,000
