Purpose

MD Anderson offers a five-day training for individuals interested in becoming credentialed as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) as part of the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Program. The program offers 24 hours of required core competencies including counseling skills, motivational interviewing, pharmacotherapy, relapse prevention, treatment planning, and more.

The program includes a Prescriber Track taking place on Thursday of the training week. It includes 7 credit hours covering pharmacotherapy and treatment planning.

Up to 32.25 hours of continuing education credit is available.

Eligibility

This training is intended for healthcare providers and behavioral health professionals, who counsel and treat patients toward full abstinence from tobacco and nicotine products.

Prescriber track: $250

Discounts:

  • Employees working at academic, health science centers, or schools of health professions: $900
  • Employees working in Federally Qualified Health Centers, local mental health authorities, or state and local health departments: $650

A scholarship opportunity is available for employees in Veterans Affairs nationally or health centers in rural Texas counties providing tobacco and nicotine cessation services. Limited slots are available. Rural counties are available on the Texas State Office of Rural Health map.

Application process

Registration is limited to facilitate learning and maximize interaction with faculty. Training dates are available on the program website.
