Purpose

The Maternal Produce Prescription Program (MP3) offers funding to support community-based organizations to develop produce prescription intervention programs that promote access to healthy foods for pregnant and postpartum women and their families in low-income rural and urban areas.

Program objectives:

  • Increase the number of pregnant and postpartum women enrolled in MP3 and receiving nutrition education
  • Increase the number of enrolled pregnant women receiving produce prescription interventions
  • Increase the self-reported fruit and vegetable intake among enrolled women and their families
  • Build and strengthen community partnerships to increase access to healthy foods

Program goals

  • Increase fruit and vegetable intake by pregnant and postpartum women and their families
  • Increase household food security
  • Improve maternal health outcomes
  • Improve birth outcomes

Eligibility

Eligible applicants:

  • State, county, city, township, and special district governments
  • Independent school districts
  • Public, private, and state-controlled institutions of higher education
  • Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
  • Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments)
  • Nonprofit organizations with and without 501(c)(3) status with the IRS
  • For-profit organizations and small businesses

Projects are expected to partner with at least 1 healthcare provider and at least 1 community- based organization.
