Funding for innovative research that will inform and support the delivery of high-quality, continuously improving mental health services to benefit individuals with, or at risk for developing, a mental illness. Research on innovative service delivery models that seek to reduce disparities in service access, quality, and outcomes for racial and ethnic minority groups, individuals limited by language or cultural barriers, sexual and gender minorities, individuals living in rural areas, socioeconomically disadvantaged persons, and other underserved groups is encouraged.

Grants to support research educational and outreach activities that complement other formal training programs in the mission areas of the NIH Institutes and Centers, especially the public health impact of alcohol, opioids, and other substances, their associated consequences, and the persistent stigma associated with them.

Cancer Control Research in Persistent Poverty Areas (U54 Clinical Trial Optional) Inactive
Funding for the development of U54 Specialized Research Centers that consist of transdisciplinary, collaborative teams of institutions, clinics, communities, and tribes. Centers will provide support to early career investigators and develop a cancer prevention and control research program that focuses on, and serves, populations living in persistent poverty areas. Preference will be given to applications that include rural persistent poverty census tracts within the scope of their research.

Pilot Practice-based Research for Primary Care Suicide Prevention (R34 Clinical Trial Optional) Inactive
Grants for research to evaluate the effectiveness of existing suicide prevention practices and clinical trials that develop, optimize, and pilot test interventions and service delivery approaches. Projects focused on strategies to reduce health disparities are encouraged.

Funding for educational initiatives and programs designed to increase awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Program goals are to 1) empower people with COPD, their families, and caregivers to recognize and reduce the burden of COPD, and 2) improve the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and management of COPD by improving the quality of care delivered across the healthcare continuum. Applications from rural and other areas of high COPD disease burden are encouraged.
