Purpose

The Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program offers loan repayment assistance for physicians and surgeons who agree to practice in an eligible Health Professional Shortage Area or other qualified facility in California for a service term of at least 3 years.

Eligibility

Eligible disciplines include:

  • Primary care practicing family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or obstetrics/gynecology
  • Emergency medicine
  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry
  • Surgery

Eligible geographic areas and approved site designations:

  • Children's Hospitals
  • Reproductive Health Clinics
  • Correctional Facilities
  • County-Operated Health Facilities
  • Critical Access Hospitals
  • Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and FQHC Look-Alikes
  • Health Professional Shortage Area – Primary Care and Mental Health
  • Native American Health Centers
  • Primary Care Shortage Areas (PCSA)
  • Public School Facilities
  • Rural Health Clinics (RHC)
  • State-Operated Health Facilities
  • Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Facilities
  • Veteran's Facilities
