The RuralMed Program at the University of North Dakota's School of Medicine and Health Sciences offers medical students full tuition in the form of a forgivable loan in return for a 5-year service agreement to practice family medicine or general surgery in rural North Dakota upon graduation.


The program accepts applications from first-year medical students who are enrolled at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

A maximum of 8 students will be accepted each year. Each student will receive full tuition in the form of a forgivable loan.

Application materials should be submitted by email to Jane Thorvilson or in-person to SMHS Room W101.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, with a soft deadline of July 1 each year.
