The Dr. G. Norris Howell Mississippi Rural Dentists Scholarship Program (MRDSP) offers a scholarship to rural dentistry students in Mississippi who agree to practice in underserved rural areas of Mississippi upon completion of their degree.

The program is designed for students currently residing in rural areas of Mississippi who wish to return to those areas to practice dentistry.

There are currently 2 program phases.

• Phase I: Undergraduate Education:
  • DAT preparation
  • Rural practicing dentist mentoring
  • Two-day biannual Dental Encounters experiences at UMMC
  • Preferred candidate for $35,000-per-year dental school scholarship
• Phase II: Dental Education:
  • $35,000 per year scholarship
  • Recognition of MRDSP Scholar status from faculty members
  • Professional mentoring by rural dentist

Scholarship recipients will be selected from current dental students and college seniors who have participated in the undergraduate phase of MRDSP and are admitted to dental school prior to the April 1 application deadline.

A scholarship up to $35,000 per year for dental students.

Upon completion of dental school training, the MRDSP scholar must enter practice in a community of 10,000 or fewer located more than 20 miles from a medically served area for a period of time equal to the number of years scholarship funding was received.
