New Mexico Medical Loan for Service Program

The New Mexico Medical Loan for Service Program offers forgivable loans to medical students who agree to practice in a healthcare shortage area of New Mexico upon completion of their education.
For every year of service provided in a designated shortage area within New Mexico, a portion of the loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness.
New Mexico residents who are accepted into a medical school within New Mexico are eligible to apply. Must be enrolled at least half-time.
Eligible practice sites include:
- Rural Health Clinics
- Community health centers
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Homeless healthcare centers
- Indian Health Services
- Migrant Health Centers
- Nonprofit health centers, clinics, and hospitals with 501(c)(3) status
The award is based on financial need of the student. Awards cannot exceed $25,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years upon resubmission of an application each year.
