Purpose

The Alabama Board of Medical Scholarship Awards offers forgivable loans to students enrolled in an Alabama medical school who agree to practice primary care in a pre-approved medically underserved community in Alabama upon graduation.

Loans are repaid at different rates depending on the population of the community served by the loan recipient:

  • One year of practice per year of loan for those serving populations less than 5,000
  • One and one-fourth years of practice per year of loan for those serving populations more than 5,000 and less than 15,000
  • One and one-half years of practice per year of loan for those serving populations more than 15,000 and less than 50,000
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are any Alabama resident enrolled in any of the state medical schools, with preference given to those demonstrating an economic need.

Educational loans may be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses.

Failure to meet contractual and/or service requirements will result in a requirement to repay the loan with simple interest.
