Tennessee Rural Residency Stipend Program offers a stipend to primary care physicians studying in Tennessee residency programs or physicians with Tennessee affiliations who are in out-of-state primary care residency programs in exchange for agreeing to practice in a rural/underserved area of Tennessee.

Applicants must agree to serve for one year per year of stipend accepted.


Physicians training in Tennessee residency programs or physicians training in other states that have a Tennessee affiliation or other circumstances that connect them with a Tennessee practice site.

Medical residents are encouraged to apply during their first year of residency. Applications submitted later than 60 days prior to program completion will not be accepted.

Geographic coverage
Amount of funding

$35,000 per year for up to 4 years, depending upon the length of the residency program. The maximum stipend is $140,000.

Complete the online form to begin the process.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with an annual review deadline of November 1. Applications received after November 1 will be reviewed for the following year.
