Purpose

The New Mexico Rural Health Care Practitioner Tax Credit program offers a tax credit to certain healthcare professionals who provide care in rural areas of New Mexico.

Eligibility

Use the full facility address in the Am I Rural? Tool to determine rural eligibility. To qualify, the facility must meet at least one rural definition under the Program Eligibility section and be in at least one area under the Medically Underserved Areas/Populations section.

Eligible professions include:

  • Physicians (MD and DO)
  • Physician Assistants
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists
  • Certified Nurse Midwives
  • Registered Nurses
  • Dentists (DMD, DDS)
  • Dental Hygienists
  • Psychologists
  • Optometrists
  • Podiatrists
  • Optometrists
  • Pharmacists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Licensed Clinical/Independent Social Workers
  • Professional Mental Health Counselor/Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselors
  • Marriage and Family Therapists
  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors
  • Professional Art Therapists

New Mexico
Amount of funding

$5,000 credit for physicians, dentists, psychologists, podiatrists, and optometrists.

$3,000 credit for all other eligible practitioners

Application process

Applications for a Certificate of Eligibility are accepted at the beginning of January of each year for the previous tax year.
