Purpose

The Rasmuson Foundation provides capital grants for Alaska-based nonprofits, individual artists, and nonprofit leaders that are working towards promoting a better quality of life for all Alaskans.

Historically, grants have been made in the areas of human services, arts and culture, community and economic development, sports and recreation, health, environment, education, human rights, public safety, and science.

Capital grants fall under two tiers.
  • Tier 1 grants are for short-term projects that include, but are not limited to, the purchase of furnishings, appliances, vehicles, technology, building construction and renovation, medical equipment, sports equipment, scientific equipment, musical instruments, and library collections.
  • Tier 2 grants are for large building projects and projects of strategic importance or an innovative nature that address issues of broad community or statewide significance.
Eligibility

Organizations must be based in Alaska, have 501(c)(3) status, and be classified as a "not a private foundation" under section 509(a) of the tax code.

In some cases, the Rasmuson Foundation will fund units of government, such as a city or tribe, or religious organizations if the project has broad community impact.
