Hawaii State Loan Repayment Program
The Hawaii State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) offers eligible health professionals an opportunity to receive assistance with the repayment of their qualified educational loans in exchange for a minimum 2-year commitment to provide healthcare services at an eligible site in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
Eligible applicants are United States citizens or U.S. nationals with an unrestricted license to practice in Hawaii. Eligible professions include:
- Allopathic medicine practicing in an approved specialty: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, geriatrics, or psychiatry
- Osteopathic medicine practicing in an approved specialty: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, geriatrics, or psychiatry
- Doctor of dental surgery/doctor of dental medicine practicing in an approved specialty: general and pediatric dentistry
- Dental therapist licensed to practice within the state
- Registered dietitian licensed to practice within the state
- Nurse practitioner practicing in an approved specialty: adult, family, pediatrics, psychiatry/mental health, geriatrics, or women's health
- Certified nurse-midwife
- Physician assistant practicing in an approved specialty: adult, family, pediatrics, psychiatry/mental health, geriatrics, or women's health
- Registered dental hygienist
- Health service psychologist
- Licensed clinical social worker
- Psychiatric nurse specialist
- Licensed professional counselor
- Marriage and family therapist
- Registered nurse
- Pharmacist
- Alcohol and substance abuse counselor licensed/credentialed/certified by their state of practice that meet educational requirements and master's degree requirement
Criteria for employment sites:
- Be a public and nonprofit private entities located in and providing healthcare services in HPSAs
- Be an active HPSA site in Hawaii
- Sites must charge for professional services at the usual and customary prevailing rates
- Provide discounts for individuals with limited incomes, such as using a sliding fee scale
Employment sites may include:
- Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)
- Migrant health centers
- Homeless programs
- Public housing programs
- FQHC Look-Alikes
- Rural Health Clinics
- Community outpatient facilities
- Community mental health facilities
- State and county health department clinics
- Immigration and Customs Enforcement
- Health Service Corps free clinics
- Mobile units
- School-based programs
- Critical Access Hospitals affiliated with a qualified outpatient clinic
- Long-term care facilities
- State mental health facilities
- Tribally-operated 638 health programs
- Correction and detention facilities
- Private practices (solo or group) that are in HPSAs and meet criteria
Funding amounts are not stated.
Hawaii SLRP sites or other donors must provide matching funds equal to half of the award.
