Purpose

The Wisconsin AHEC Scholars Program is a multidisciplinary certificate program for certain health professions students that offers opportunities for hands-on training, experience in rural and underserved communities, and networking with other students and professionals.

This program requires a 2 year commitment and consists of 40 hours of classroom or online instruction and 40 hours per year of hands-on clinical training in addition to the regular coursework required by the degree program.

AHEC Scholars is a program of the National AHEC Organization that is implemented by local, statewide, and regional AHECs. Core topic areas covered in the curriculum include:

  • Interprofessional education
  • Behavioral health integration
  • Social determinants of health
  • Cultural competency
  • Practice transformation
  • Current and emerging health issues
  • Virtual learning and telehealth
  • Connecting communities and supporting health professionals
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are Wisconsin students currently enrolled in or accepted in an approved health profession program who are 2 years away from from completing their degree.

Approved degree programs include:

  • Dentistry (DDS, DMD)
  • Medicine (DO, MD)
  • Mental Health Counseling/Psychology (MA, MS, PhD)
  • Nurse Practitioner (DNP)
  • Occupational Therapy (MOT, OTD)
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)
  • Pharmacy (PharmD)
  • Physical Therapy (DPT)
  • Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
  • Physician Assistant (MPAS)
  • Public Health (BPH, MPH, PhD)
  • Registered Dietitian (RDN)
  • Registered Nurse (ADN, BSN, MSN)
  • Social Work (BSW, MSW, PhD)
  • Substance Use Disorder Counselor (AAS)

This program is provided at no cost to participating scholars. A $1,500 stipend will be provided over 2 years. Other benefits are described on the program website.
